John the baptist was a preview of the coming Christ

The Elijah Forerunner

The forerunner, whom God calls "Elijah," is a sign of the Christ.  His life will resemble what Jesus will do when He comes.  He is a preview of the Messiah.  John the Baptist was a picture of what Christ would do at His first coming.  Therefore, Jesus called John, "Elijah."

Mat 11:14

And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.

The forerunner is sent to prepare the way of the Lord and be a sign and a preview of the Messiah.

Mat 17:12

“But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.”

Why did John have to suffer and be executed?  Because Jesus would suffer and be executed.
